Description

This charming solar lamp by Sonnenglas stores energy during the day and emits that energy at night in the form of light. It is perfect as a garden lamp and creates a cosy, idyllic evening atmosphere.

You can turn on the light with a switch on the magnetic strap. The four solar-powered LED lights create a beautiful glow. You can customise the interior of the glass to your liking: fill it up with sand, dried flowers or pretty pebbles as decorations.

Fairtrade:

The idea for Sonneglas was connected with people from the start, focusing on sustainable community development. The glass jars not only capture energy from sunlight but also bring people together.

Since 2011, solar lamps by "Suntoy" have been hand-produced in South Africa, creating over 60 jobs. The glass jars are supplied by Consol, a large glass company from Johannesburg.

At the Suntoy factory, workers receive training and receive professional certification for their work. The company works according to the principles of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), certifications for responsible business and sustainable development.

Fair pay is not the only issue important to the company. European distribution has established a fund that currently finances one hour per day of further employee training in mathematics and English during business hours.

The history:

  • South Africa's informal settlements do not have reliable electric power, so kerosene lamps and candles are used primarily as light sources, which can cause severe fires. In 2010, the South African electrical engineer Harald Schulz of SUNTOY commissioned the Consol manufacturer from Johannesburg to develop a solar lamp glass. The aim was to establish a safe reading lamp that does not increase the risk of fire. Five years later, more than 750,000 of these solar lamps have already been produced. In South Africa, the solar glass (Consol SolarJar ™) has become a cult favourite.
